The old town of Appingedam, the open fields or the ever changing Wad. Discover it all on foot and enjoy some surprisingly lovely spots and panoramic views...
VVV Appingedam has several routes which introduce you to all the Highlights and background information. The routes have different themes and lengths: a short tour of the town or far into the surrounding area. Besides walks, there are also two water routes: by canoe through the old centre or by motorboat from the city of Groningen - Appingedam - Schildmeer and back.
A handy book containing all the routes is for sale in all the VVVs in Top van Groningen.
Got a smartphone?
If so, download the free Stad Appingedam app for iPhone or Android. This GPS app allows you to easily follow your route of your walk, for example - even in offline mode. The app also provides instructions when you reach difficult parts of the route as well as information about special or interesting places you pass on the way.
Mud flat walking
Experience the Wadden Sea world heritage site during a walk over the mud flats. There are various tours, but the one to Rottumeroog is particularly interesting! Walk to the island in around 3.5 hours. For more information and dates, visit www.wadlopen.nl.
This tiny island is around 11 kilometres off the coast and has continued to decrease in size over the years. At the moment, it consists of a row of dunes and a salt marsh. After an occupation by the son of the last wreck master in 1991, the government decided to continue looking after the island in a nature-friendly way.
Rottumeroog can be visited during a mud flat walk from Uithuizen or sail on the "Noordster" with a guide from the Forestry Commission. More information is available from one of the VVV offices.
