A quarter of all the historic churches and churches worth seeing in the Netherlands are in Groningen. Church services are still held in some of these churches, while others are used for meetings or parties or have acquired a cultural function.
The Stichting Oude Groninger Kerken promotes the material and functional preservation of historic Churches in Groningen and their surroundings.

The churches in this region have remained largely untouched. This is because the region was rich in the Middle Ages and ‘poor’ in later centuries when many churches were modernised.
