The estates in Groningen are well worth a visit. As soon as you step inside, you are transported back to the 18th century.

Here and there, they appear in the Groningen landscape. The beautifully preserved estates used by noblemen from past centuries: the estates (borgen). The Groningen estates were originally ‘stone houses’. In the 14th and 15th centuries, these stone buildings provided protection for rich farmers in times of danger. When the owners prospered in the 16th century, they were expanded and decorated. The stylish elegance of the estates still reflects the wealth of past ages.
